Local Firm Reaching Out

Electronic medical records and billing firm Synergy Healthcare Resources have branched out into franchising.

The company, which handles doctors' medical billing and bookkeeping and also markets its own billing and record keeping software, opened its first franchise operation earlier this year in Colorado, spokesman Brian Kazmucha said.

Others are expected to open soon in New York and Indiana, Kazmucha said.

Synergy currently handles electronic billing and record keeping for eight doctors and also works with health care providers who use Synergy software to do their own billing and record keeping, Kazmucha said.

The company launched its franchise operation in February with plans to make Synergy a nationwide brand, Kazmucha said.

Buyers pay a $60,000 franchise fee, which includes a five-day training program, he said.

"We work with each potential (franchise) candidate on a case-by-case basis," Kazmucha said.

Company founder Debra Zandstra-Baker started the business 20 years ago in LaPorte and has since moved it to the Eastport Center industrial complex in Valparaiso.

A move toward increased electronic record keeping by the health care industry has fueled growth of the company, Kazmucha said.
